My mother's birth name was BATES. She was fostered by a family named Egan who "obtained" her from a woman who had been in the Music Hall. Later she evidently took a little boy to the Egan home, but they would not take him in. I believe she was married, and had been "naughty." She did not want her husband to find out when he returned from service in World War I. My mother was born October 31, 1917 in London.
