I am researching my husband's family name of GOSLING - Joseph Gosling was born in Bermondsey? in about 1867 and he was a bootmaker, he married Emma Groves in 1895 in Southwark. I have found Joseph's younger sisters's births, his parents marriage of 1866 - Joseph Gosling and Ann Bailey, his father's (a leather dresser) birth of 1835 in Southwark, Joseph snr's parents William (a carpenter) and Mary Ann Rhodes marriage of 1824 in St Mary Newington, and William's baptism of 1804 in Richmond, Surrey. I have not, to date, been able to find Joseph's (1867?) birth, but have found him on censuses etc - probably took place in the Bermondsey/Southwark area. Also been researching my mother's maiden name of THARP - who all came from the Deptford area (not strictly London in those days but Kent/Surrey!) and have managed to get back to 1790's - I'm stuck on a marriage of about 1770. They were all shipwrights/sawyers early on and later licensed victuallers and had shops in the Greenwich/Woolwich areas.
