My father and his sister were issues of a marriage between Flossie Loreena Austin and Anthony Dewey (or possibly) Dewey Anthony, Gerard. The former appears on my father's birth certificate. My father, his sister Ardelle ("Elda") and my grandmother have been gone now for 20-40 years, while, I understand that my father discovered Mr. Gerard living in "western Pennsylvania" in 1949; and Mr. Gerard died only months later; probably in part from war injury from his participation in WWI as part of the A.E.F. Gerard was in the U.S. Cavalry in France and England (I believe riding actual horses, as opposed to tanks) when he was gassed and lost at least part of one lung.

My father's mother's father William E. Austin, adopted my father (his own grandson) giving him the same name William E. Austin, when Anthony Gerard returned disabled from war and unable to keep his family—he disappeared, and left my grandmother with two children—those were tough times and a tough situation. I am William J. Austin, but I realize that I am also a Gerard (Alsaice-Lorraine being a mentioned point of departure). I would greatly appreciate any assistance in finding my paternal roots.

I believe that Anthony Gerard was born in eastern Ohio or western Pennsylvania, around 1900, and died in western PA in 1949.
