Edmund SMITH was the father of Charles Smith born 1832.
Charles was an uncovenanted and worked as an asst in finance dept at the time of his marrige to
Mathilde Sanderson dau of James SANDERSON. They were married in Old
Church,Fort William, CALCUTTA in 1861 by Geo Lovely
Subsequently they had 3 sons that I have found so far:
August Edward Garstin Smith born Calcutta 1862
Alfred Hermann Smith born Calcutta 1864
Charles U B Smith born NAGPUR 1866
Charles sr. was working for the Bank of Bengal, Nagpur in 1866 and resigned in less than 2 years.
August Edward moved to USA married my great grandmother Ida LELAND and had 2 children, Ina and Leland. August Edward became what I have coined 'a rant and rave' author and self pubvlished several books. He wrote under the name of Edward Garstin Smith or Edward G Smith. He also wrote promotional ads and pamphlets. Ida divorced him in 1900; the children were adopted by her sister Harriet. Ina is my grandmother. Leland died in 1926. I have not found when August Edward died.
I don't know what happed to the other 2 sons, Alfred and Charles U B Smith.
So, unfortunately that is all I know. I know there is a Smith Road in Calcutta—why it was so named I don't know. I would try Calcutta first since the family was from there originally—I know India is a BIG country so this is the needle in the haystack!
