My gggg grandfather, Rev.Dr John Owen m.
Charlotte Green. John was rector of a church in Fulham in 1800, he was first
secretary of British & Foreign Bible Society. His daughter Frances
Mary married William Wilberforce's oldest son, William. His son, Stephen,
came to Australia in l829 with wife Rachel Fletcher of Liverpool.
Another son,Henry, was a clergyman. John Owen was also a teacher. A
school - a square brick building with school-room and playground was just
outside the churchyard and opposite the vicarage. The school was run by 3
sisters named Batsford, one of whom, Ann, married a master Mr.
Cleesby. WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THE CHURCH AND SCHOOL? I WANT TO KNOW MORE
ABOUT JOHN AND CHARLOTTE AND THE FAMILY??
Stephen later attended Roy's school in Fulham. The gardener at the
vicarage was Mr. Beadle and Stephen's nurse was Nurse Eddowes. Our family
has a memoir written by Stephen about life in England, his journey to
Australia and his life as a commissariat in early Australia. I'm
searching to fill in the gaps.
I know Eliza Fraser brought a letter of recommendation to the widow
Charlotte Owen, thence to the Lord Mayor of London, on her return to
England after the wreck of the "Stirling Castle" off Moreton Bay,
Queensland. Hope you all can help - Victoria, Australia, is such a long way from
Fulham, England!
