JOSEPH EVE
In London, England, on 9 April 1732, Joseph Eaves and John Oaks allegedly stole a pewter sign, valued at 15 shillings, the goods of Jarvis Barker. At a trial between the 25th and 29th of May 1732, Eaves was found guilty to the value of 10 pence and Oaks was acquitted. The Proceedings at the Sessions of the Peace, and Oyer and Terminer for the City of London and County of Middlesex (London 1732), p. 140. He was sentenced to be Transported; one source is unclear whether the date given, October 1732, is the date of his conviction or the date he arrived in America on the Caesar. Coldham, The Complete Book of Emigrants in Bondage, 1614-1775, p. 269. Kaminkows, Original Lists of Emigrants in Bondage From London to the American Colonies 1719-1744, pp. 190-1, shows him being sent from Newgate Prison to Virginia on the Caesar under Captain William Loney. He and the rest of the 117 passengers were received on board on 26 October 1732, so his conviction was probably in October. I have copies of original records indicating that they were received on board that date, out of Newgate Prison, being shipped by Jona. Forward, a Merchant of London. Consequently, it would seem Eve arrived in America toward the end of 1732. I have two lines of inquiry. First, does anyone have any information about his ancestry? Second, does anyone have access to information that would give me the whereabouts of Barker's place of business?
